Hiro first appears in the Thomas & Friends movie "Hero of the Rails", released September 2009. Hiro, a wise and kind Japanese engine who was once the Master of the Rails on Sodor, eventually fell into disrepair and was hidden in a forgotten corner of Sodor. One day Thomas the Train finds him and agrees to restore Hiro to his original glory with the help of Victor and Kevin, his new friends at Sodor Steamworks. Patchwork Hiro results when he is restored with spare parts from other engines.
